Notes

1 State Security in communist Czechoslovakia from 1945 to its dissolution in 1990. Serving as an intelligence and counterintelligence agency, it dealt with any activity considered opposition to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the state.

2 Cunningham asserts that the ŠtB and later the KGB identified Kline as a Defense Intelligence Agency recruiter.

3 In describing the Ogorodnik recruitment, Cunningham attributes a quote to Karel claiming the CIA would engage in coercive activities for recruiting an asset, such as “… Run over a child, put him behind the steering wheel and pour some whiskey on him. Sorry to say that, but its [sic] done.” There is no evidence that the CIA would even consider such a counterproductive effort at recruitment.
