Jorge Edwards
Jorge Edwards (Chile, 1931) is a novelist, short-story writer, journalist, and essayist, who has been awarded many prizes, including the National Literature Prize (Chile) in 1994 and the Cervantes Prize (Spain) in 1999. Among his outstanding works are El peso de la noche (1965; The Weight of Night), Persona Non Grata (1973; Persona Non Grata, 2004), Los convidados de piedra (1978; The Guests of Stone), Adiós, poeta (1990; Farewell, Poet), El inútil de la familia (2004; The Worthless Member of the Family), El descubrimiento de la pintura (2013; The Discovery of Painting), La última hermana (2016; The Last Sister), and Oh, maligna (2019; Wicked Woman), from which the following fragments are taken, inspired by Pablo Neruda’s “Widower’s Tango.” He is a member of the Chilean Academy of Language.
