Two element MIMO antenna with frequency reconfigurable characteristics utilizing RF MEMS for 5G applications

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a novel two-element multiple input multiple output (MIMO) reconfigurable antenna that can be switched among 600 MHz, 1.8, 2.4, 3.5, and 5.5 GHz bands. The proposed antenna consists of two semi-circular ring-shaped strip-lines and a rectangular slot on the top conducting layer of the substrate and a U-shaped slot, etched on the bottom side of the substrate. Frequency reconfigurable characteristics have been achieved using single pole four throw radio frequency micro-electro-mechanical system switch. The switch has been installed in the ground slot. The dimensions of the proposed MIMO antenna are 32 × 98 × 1 mm3. Measured isolation greater than 15 dB has been achieved in the operating bands. The calculated envelop correlation coefficient is less than 0.04 and the diversity gain in the operating bands is greater than 9.8 dB.

Muhammad Mateen Hassan received his Electronics Engineering degree from the Wah Engineering College, University of Wah, Pakistan, in 2009 and the MS degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technische Universität Chemnitz, Germany, in 2013. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD from National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan. His research interests are in the field of MIMO antennas, reconfigurable antennas, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) for RF applications and nano Technology.

Zeeshan Zahid

Dr. Zeeshan Zahid received his M.Phil Electronics from Quaid-i-Azam University, and PhD from Hanyang University, South Korea, in 2006 and 2018, respectively. He is currently serving as Assistant Professor at National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan. His doctoral research was focused on high efficiency electrically small antenna design for mobile devices. He is an active researcher and has contributed in several research papers, published in reputed journals. His research interests include antenna design for mobile devices, high efficiency and wideband antennas, circularly polarized antennas, and massive MIMO for 5G Smartphone. He is a member of IEEE and IEEE antennas and propagation society (AP-S). He serves as a technical reviewer of various international reputed journals.

Adnan Ahmed Khan

Dr. Adnan Ahmed Khan did his BE in Electrical (Telecomm) Engineering from National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan. He received his Master’s degree in Computer Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila. He received his PhD in Computer Engineering from Center of Advanced Studies in Engineering, affiliated with UET Taxila, Pakistan.

Imran Rashid

Dr. Imran Rashid did his BE in Electrical (Telecomm) Engineering from National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan, in 1999. He received his MSc degree in Telecomm Engineering (Optical Communication) from D.T.U, Denmark in 2004 and his PhD in Mobile Communication from University of Manchester, U.K in 2011.

Abdul Rauf

Dr. Abdul Rauf graduated from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan in 1998 in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunication). He subsequently received a MSc from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Denmark in 2004 in Telecommunication Engineering. He joined NUST in 2011 after completing PhD from University of Sheffield, UK.

Dr. Moazam Maqsood received his PhD from University of Surrey, U.K. His research interests are Integrated Antennas and Arrays for GNSS. Presently he is an Assistant Professor at Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Farooq Ahmed Bhatti

Dr. Farooq Ahmed Bhatti has got his Master degree in Solid State Physics from Punjab University Lahore, Pakistan in 1979. He did his PhD in Radio Physics (RF Electronics) specializing in Microwave and Millimeter-wave sources from the Department of Communication Engineering Shanghai University PR, China in 1992. He did his Post Doc in Millimeter-wave Devices from Centre for Microwave and Millimeter-wave circuit design and Applications, University of Manchester UK. He joined National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan in 1995. Presently he is an Associate Professor at National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan.
