ABSTRACT

The perception of road conditions is of great significance for optimising the driving safety and comfort of vehicles. The intelligent tyre system is considered a reliable solution for recognizing road conditions using data collected by sensors installed in tyres and corresponding algorithms. However, the existing intelligent tyre systems usually adopt point-type measurements, limiting the ability to perceive the road conditions. In this study, based on finite element analysis, an intelligent tyre system using piezoelectric cables is designed for road condition perception. Through the finite element analysis, those locations sensitive to tyre working conditions are selected for piezoelectric cable installation. Road roughness estimation and anomaly detection algorithms are designed based on field tests. Results demonstrate that the proposed system has a good performance in road condition perception, which has a beneficial effect on the driving safety of vehicles.
