ABSTRACT
Poly(4-vinylpyridine), a cheap and commercially available reagent, was used for the promotion of the condensation of aromatic aldehydes, malononitrile and 1,3-cyclohexanedione derivatives to produce 5-oxo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-chromenes in aqueous media. The profits of this procedure are, short reaction times, high yields, use of a non-toxic solvent and low cost and reusability of the catalyst.
