An Assessment of the Need for Courtroom Training in Social Work Education

Pages 111-122 | Accepted 16 Dec 2019, Published online: 31 Aug 2020

ABSTRACT

The focus of this study was to examine the relationship between the MSW curriculum at one university and 100 MSW students’ reported preparedness to interact with the court system in regard to a client. Preparedness to appear in court and the benefit of learning court competencies are assessed using participants’ social work employment history and previous appearances in court as predictor variables. Findings support that previously appearing in court is positively associated with preparedness for court and with benefits to learning court competencies. Options for incorporating court competencies into the MSW curriculum are also discussed.
