2 In the succeeding seventy years no Latino has won the Best Actor Academy Award, and only two Latino actors, Anthony Quinn and Benicio del Toro, have won, albeit for Best Supporting Actor (See Clayton Davis Citation2020). Ironically, the most recent winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor, Joaquin Phoenix, was born in San Juan, although he is not Latino.

Hagen proved just as formidable an artistic presence as her ex-husband, winning two Tony Awards for Best Actress (one for the epochal production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? In 1962) and in addition becoming a noted teacher to scores of theatrical greats such as Geraldine Page and Jason Robards, Jr. See Mel Gussow Citation2004.
4 Interestingly, Ferrer did receive a British Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Actor in The Caine Mutiny, but not an Academy Award nomination. The 1953 Best Actor nomination for Moulin Rouge became Ferrer’s last nod from his film actor peers.
5 As Peros notes, Jose’s son Miguel appeared in the Magnum, P.I. episode as his father’s character’s younger self. Miguel established a substantial career in television before prematurely dying of cancer in 2017.
6 Quinn’s situation is especially interesting because he married one of the daughters of director-producer Cecil B. DeMille, one of the true powerbrokers in Hollywood from roughly 1910 through 1960, but he still struggled to become a leading actor (Scott Baugh Citation2012).
