Quo vadis university? (¿Quo vadis universidad?)

ABSTRACT

The topics in this special issue and my own experience as a university teacher and researcher, now emerita, have led me to revisit a series of questions which have interested me for some time on the role, meaning and challenges of the university in today’s society. In the past 40 years, the unprecedented development of digital information and communication technologies, globalization and the increasing power of large corporations have disrupted value scales that were believed to be solidly entrenched. The way we create, store, access and assess information and knowledge; the world of work and knowledge; the competences and skills needed to access and remain in the university; and the ways we research and the very meaning of research have all been transformed. And the question is: What role does the university play today? Because the issues related to the ways academic responsibility and quality are assessed, the mechanisms of hiring and promoting teaching and research staff, support for innovation and scientific advancement and the role of scholarly publications in academic promotion may have very different answers depending on the institution’s mission, vision and ambition. In this text, I examine the four challenges of today’s university which I consider the most important, related to ‘excessive’ numbers of students, the exponential growth in information, the influence of business management and the bureaucratization of university work.

RESUMEN

Los temas que componen este monográfico y mi propia experiencia como docente e investigadora universitaria, ahora emérita, me llevan a recuperar una serie de cuestiones, que me han interesado desde hace tiempo, sobre al papel, el sentido y los desafíos de la Universidad en la sociedad actual. En los últimos 40 años, el desarrollo sin precedentes de las tecnologías digitales de la información y la comunicación, la globalización y el poder cada vez mayor de las grandes corpo-raciones, han trastocado escalas de valores que se creían consolidadas. Se ha transformado la manera de crear, almacenar, acceder y valorar la información y el conocimiento; el mundo del trabajo y los saberes, competencias y habilidades necesarias para acceder y permanecer en él; las formas de investigar y el sentido de la propia investigación. Y la pregunta es ¿qué papel está representando la Universidad en la sociedad actual? Porque las temáticas relacionadas con las formas de evaluar la respon-sabilidad y la calidad académica; los mecanismos de contratación y promoción del personal docente e investigador; el apoyo a la innovación y el avance científico y el papel de las publicaciones científicas en la promoción académica, pueden tener respuestas muy diferentes según se plantee la misión, la visión y la ambición de esta institución. En este texto sitúo los cuatro desafíos que considero más importantes para la Universidad actual relacionados con la ‘masificación’, el crecimiento exponencial de la información, la influencia de la gestión empresarial y la burocratización del trabajo universitario.
