Microhabitat and ecology of the rare boreal endemic Lechea intermedia var. depauperata Hodgdon (Cistaceae)

ABSTRACT

Understanding the ecology and life history of rare species is critical to assessing their conservation status and developing effective management strategies. We examined the habitat and demography of impoverished pinweed (Lechea intermedia var. depauperata), a rare, narrowly endemic post-fire coloniser native to the Athabasca Plain of Canada, using a combination of germination tests, plant community assessments, and microclimate monitoring. In addition, we monitored demographic trends over three years in five of six known extant populations to explore the temporal dynamics of impoverished pinweed populations. Areas supporting impoverished pinweed populations were found to be warmer than adjacent areas during the growing season; however, warmer temperatures did not correlate with higher seed germination. Plant community composition varied little between occupied and unoccupied areas. Demographic assessments suggest the taxon is likely a short-lived perennial, and populations appear to be self-sustaining in the short term. Based on work presented here and in a previous study, we suggest that impoverished pinweed has several characteristics of inherently vulnerable taxa, and we recommend that population trends be monitored over time. Further, we recommend directions for future work to address identified outstanding knowledge gaps.

RÉSUMÉ

Comprendre l’écologie et l’histoire de vie des espèces rares est crucial pour évaluer leur statut de conservation et pour développer des mesures d’aménagement efficaces. Nous avons examiné l’habitat et la démographie du léchéa appauvri (Lechea intermedia var. depauperata), une espèce rare, endémique et indigène de la plaine de l’Athabasca colonisant les sites brûlés. Pour ce faire, nous avons fait des tests de germination, évalué les communautés végétales et fait le suivi du microclimat. De plus, nous avons documenté les tendances démographiques sur trois ans de cinq des six populations connues afin d’explorer la dynamique temporelle des populations de léchéa appauvri. Les zones à léchéa appauvri étaient plus chaudes que les zones adjacentes pendant la saison de croissance. Toutefois, les températures plus chaudes n’étaient pas corrélées à un taux de germination plus élevé. La composition des communauté végétales variait peu entre les zones occupées et non-occupées par le léchéa appauvri. Les évaluations démographiques suggèrent que le taxon est une vivace de courte durée dont les populations semblent auto-suffisantes à court terme. Sur la base de nos résultats et de ceux d’une étude précédente, nous suggérons que le léchéa appauvri a plusieurs caractéristiques des taxons vulnérables et nous recommandons qu’un suivi des populations soit réalisé. En outre, nous suggérons des avenues de recherches futures.
