ABSTRACT

This study aims to modeltourists' movement patterns in the Archaeological Park of Petra. It combines topographical and human characteristics in an algorithm that can be spatially manipulated. The study’s model hypothesizes that topography is essential in estimating the visit time and takes into account the stay and delay time. The above factors are modelled mathematically using ArcGIS 10.2, after data from questionnaires (distributed to 31 tour guides) and land surveys. The results show that 3.47 hours for the stopover and 6.31 hours for the delay time are required for the whole visit. Thus, visitors take about 11 hours, which requires planning prior to the visit. The model produces a time contour map, which would guide visitors during their visits.
