Economic Policy under the Abe Administration: The Evolution of Abenomics

Abstract

This article focuses on the economic policies under the Shinzo Abe administration in office from December 2012 until September 2020. The economic policies under the Abe administration are generally referred to as “Abenomics.” There are several possible definitions of “Abenomics,” but for the purposes of this paper, we will take the broadest definition and refer to the entire range of economic policies that were implemented under the Abe administration.Footnote1

Komine Takao

Komine Takao graduated from the University of Tokyo (B.A. in Economics). Entered the Economic Planning Agency in 1969. There he served as Director of the Economic Research Institute and Director General of the Research Bureau. In 2001, he was appointed Director General of the National and Regional Planning Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. In 2003 he was Professor in the Graduate School of Social Science and, in 2008, Professor in the Graduate School of Regional Policy Design at Hosei University; and in 2010, he was Senior Research Fellow, Japan Center for Economic Research. Since March 2017 he is Professor, Faculty of Regional Development, Taisho University and since 2010 he is a Senior Research Fellow, Japan Center for Economic Research. Joined NPI as Senior Research Counselor in 2015.
