Why it’s still worth it: continuing to supervise trainee students in a period of crisis in Italy

ABSTRACT

Today, social workers work in a context radically different from that of the past. Managerialism, reduced resources, and the expansion of procedures and standards have become structural components of social work. The article reports the results of a survey conducted on a sample of supervisors in Italy that analysed the consequences of this change on the decision to continue or stop being the supervisor of social work students. Research shows that the prolongation over time of unfavourable working conditions generates a significant ‘corrosive’ effect on the motivation of social workers to continue to perform the role of supervisor. The article also highlights the strategies that can be used by social workers to counteract the effort of supervising students in the new organisational and work climate and the importance of the problem for the future education of practitioners.

I social worker lavorano oggi in un contesto radicalmente diverso dal passato. Il managerialismo, la contrazione delle risorse, l’espansione delle procedure e degli standard sono diventati elementi strutturali del social work. L’articolo riporta i risultati di una ricerca su un campione di social worker in Italia che analizza le conseguenze di tale cambiamento sulla decisione di continuare o interrompere di svolgere il ruolo di supervisore degli studenti in tirocinio. I risultati della ricerca mostrano come il prolungamento nel tempo delle condizioni di lavoro sfavorevoli contribuisce a generare un importante effetto ‘corrosivo’ sulle motivazioni dei social worker a continuare a svolgere il ruolo di supervisori. L’articolo mette anche in luce le strategie che possono essere utilizzate dai social worker per contrastare la fatica di seguire gli studenti nel nuovo clima organizzativo e lavorativo e l’importanza del problema per il futuro del educazione dei futuri professionisti.
