“Now I feel much better than in my previous life”: Narratives of occupational transitions in young transgender adults

ABSTRACT

Research indicates that the life courses of transgender people are accompanied by occupational transitions, defined as specific moments in life at which occupations change in favour of alternative occupations due to reactions to life events. This study used a narrative approach to gain a better understanding of the occupational transitions experienced by four German transgender adults during the development of their gender identity from early childhood to early adulthood. The participants were aged between 19 and 25. Data were collected through narrative interviews and resulted in four stories developed using narrative analysis. The participants underwent a variety of occupational transitions. These started in their earliest childhood, when they acted like members of their felt gender for the first time. The occupations performed by the participants during the development of their transgender identity changed to specific occupations related to gender transition and finally resulted in the occupational life of their felt gender. The stories give an insight into numerous issues related to occupational performance and occupational transitions in childhood, puberty and early adulthood. Sometimes the participants experienced occupational losses. At other times, their occupational identities were positively affected by their gender transitions, with the result that they were able to live their lives more in keeping with their gender identities. The researchers concluded that studies with transgender people will contribute to a better understanding of the interaction of gender and the performance of occupations.

研究表明，变性人的生活历程伴随着生活活动的转变。这种转变定义为在生活中的特定时刻，生活活动因人生事件的反应而改变，趋向于选择另一种活动。本研究采用叙事方法，以便更好地了解四名德国变性成人在从幼儿期到成年早期发展性别认同过程中所经历的生活活动转变。参与者年龄在19岁至25岁之间。通过叙述性访谈收集数据，并通过叙事分析得出四个故事。参与者经历了各种生活活动转变。这些转变始于他们童年初期，那时他们的行为首次像他们所感觉到的性别的人一样。在他们的变性身份发展过程中，参与者所进行的活动改变为与性别转变相关的特定活动，并最终导致其感觉性别的生活活动生涯。这些故事让人们深入了解与童年、青春期和成年早期的生活活动表现和生活活动转变相关的众多问题。有时参与者经历生活活动丧失。在其它时候，他们的生活活动身份受到性别转变的积极影响，其结果是，他们的生活能够更加符合自己的性别认同。研究人员得出结论，对变性人的研究将有助于更好地了解性别与生活活动表现之间的相互作用。

Las investigaciones indican que la trayectoria de vida de las personas transgénero se acompaña de transiciones ocupacionales; éstas se definen como momentos específicos de la vida en que las ocupaciones desempeñadas son cambiadas por trabajos alternativos en respuesta a los acontecimientos ocurridos en la misma. El presente estudio empleó un enfoque narrativo orientado a comprender mejor las transiciones ocupacionales experimentadas por cuatro adultos alemanes transgénero, cuyas edades oscilan entre los 19 y 25 años, durante la formación de su identidad de género, desde la primera infancia hasta principios de la edad adulta. La información fue recabada a través de entrevistas narrativas; de las mismas surgieron cuatro historias, cuya elaboración implicó el uso del análisis narrativo. Así, se constató que los participantes experimentaron una serie de transiciones ocupacionales. Éstas comenzaron en su infancia temprana, cuando por primera vez se comportaron como integrantes del género asumido. Las ocupaciones desempeñadas por los participantes durante la formación de su identidad transgénera transitaron hacia ocupaciones relacionadas específicamente con la transición de género, lo que resultó en que la vida ocupacional realizada fuera la del género asumido. Estas historias dan cuenta de numerosas cuestiones vinculadas con el desempeño ocupacional y las transiciones ocupacionales durante la infancia, la pubertad y la edad adulta temprana. A veces, los participantes experimentaron pérdidas ocupacionales. En otros momentos su transición de género afectó positivamente sus identidades ocupacionales, lo que dio lugar a que pudieran vivir de manera más acorde con sus identidades de género. Finalmente, los investigadores concluyeron que los estudios hechos en colaboración con personas transgéneras redundarán en una mejor comprensión de la interacción entre el género y el desempeño ocupacional.
