Occupational ecology: An emerging field for occupational science

ABSTRACT

The following article highlights the need to develop an occupational ecology, that is, the study of the deep and inseparable connection between human occupation and the ecological environment. Occupational ecology emerges as an occupational science field of study in an interprofessional and transdisciplinary dialogue. Potential fields of study are proposed for the development of an occupational ecology. Different projects and examples are presented to illustrate this proposition. This knowledge may empower, among other disciplines, the development of an ecosocial occupational therapy, translating theory to praxis, whose purpose is the creation of healthy, inclusive, and sustainable communities. Ecopations and eco-occupations are presented as key related concepts for occupational ecology.

RESUME

L'article suivant souligne la nécessité de développer une écologie occupationnelle, c'est-à-dire l'étude du lien profond et inséparable entre l'activité humaine et l'environnement écologique. L'écologie occupationnelle émerge en tant que domaine d'étude en sciences de l’occupation dans le cadre d'un dialogue interprofessionnel et transdisciplinaire. Des domaines potentiels de recherche sont proposés pour le développement d'une écologie occupationnelle. Différents projets et exemples sont présentés pour illustrer cette proposition. Ces connaissances peuvent favoriser, parmi d'autres disciplines, le développement d'une ergothérapie éco-sociale, traduisant la théorie en pratique, dont l'objectif est la création de communautés saines, inclusives et durables. Les écopations et les éco-occupations sont présentées comme des concepts clés liés à l'écologie occupationnelle.

KURZZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Der folgende Artikel unterstreicht die Notwendigkeit, eine Betätigungsökologie zu entwickeln, d. h. die Untersuchung der tiefen und untrennbaren Verbindung zwischen der menschlichen Betätigung und der ökologischen Umwelt. Die Betätigungsökologie entsteht als betätigungswissenschaftliches Studienfeld in einem interprofessionellen und transdisziplinären Dialog. Es werden mögliche Studienfelder für die Entwicklung einer Betätigungsökologie vorgeschlagen. Verschiedene Projekte und Beispiele werden vorgestellt, um diesen Vorschlag zu illustrieren. Dieses Wissen kann neben anderen Disziplinen die Entwicklung einer ökosozialen Ergotherapie unterstützen, die die Theorie in die Praxis umsetzt und deren Ziel die Schaffung gesunder, inklusiver und nachhaltiger Gemeinschaften ist. «Ecopations» und Öko-Betätigungen werden als Schlüsselkonzepte für die Betätigungsökologie vorgestellt.

El siguiente artículo destaca la necesidad de desarrollar una ecología ocupacional, es decir, el estudio de la conexión profunda e inseparable que se establece entre la ocupación humana y el entorno ecológico. La ecología ocupacional surge como campo de estudio de la ciencia ocupacional a partir de un diálogo interprofesional y transdisciplinar. Así, para el desarrollo de una ecología ocupacional, se proponen posibles campos de estudio Y se presentan diferentes proyectos y ejemplos para ilustrar esta propuesta. Mediante el traslado de la teoría a la praxis, este conocimiento puede empoderar el desarrollo de una terapia ocupacional ecosocial y otras disciplinas cuyo propósito sea crear comunidades sanas, inclusivas y sostenibles. En la ecología ocupacional, las ecopations y las ecoocupaciones aparecen como conceptos clave relacionados.
