1 The emergence of ‘trans’ as a category of meaning has been widely discussed (for a brief history, see Shepherd and Hanckel in this special issue). We are using this shortened term as an umbrella concept to recognise both transgender and gender diverse people, including non-binary people, and those with fluid and multiple genders (Cover, Citation2019).
