Moving through a dappled world: the aesthetics of shade and shadow in place

ABSTRACT

In addressing geography’s neglect of shade and shadow, this paper explores how the dynamic play of shadow and light constitutes an integral part of everyday affective and sensory attunement to place and guides pedestrian movement. First, we identify how particular shadows are shaped by distinctive kinds of solar radiance, material forms, human visual perception and cultural representations. We then consider the different cultural ways in which shade and shadow have been interpreted across space and time and identify diverse shadowy effects in different geographical contexts. Thereafter, we focus on particular key elements of central Melbourne’s shadow aesthetics, discuss how patterns of shade guide urban choreographies, and explore how architects have imaginatively manipulated shadow.

RÉSUMÉ

En abordant les thèmes de nuances et d’ombres qui ont été oubliés par les géographies, cette communication explore comment la dynamique des ombres et des lumières fait partie intégrante de l’harmonisation affective et sensorielle quotidienne pour placer et guider les mouvements des passants. Pour commencer, nous définissons la manière dont les ombres sont modelées par différents types de rayons solaires, de formes matérielles, par la perception visuelle et les représentations culturelles humaines. Ensuite, nous étudions les différentes pratiques culturelles dans lesquelles les nuances et les ombres ont été interprétées dans l’espace et dans le temps et nous identifions divers effets d’ombres dans différents contextes géographiques. Après, nous nous concentrons en particulier sur des éléments clefs de l’esthétique des ombres dans le centre de Melbourne, nous débattons comment les motifs d’ombres guident les chorégraphies urbaines et nous explorons la manière dont les architectes ont manipulé les ombres de manière imaginative.

Al abordar el descuido de los matices y la sombra en la geografía, este artículo explora cómo el juego dinámico de sombras y luces constituye una parte integral de la sintonía afectiva y sensorial cotidiana para ubicar y guiar el movimiento de peatones. Primero, identificamos cómo las sombras son moldeadas por tipos distintivos de radiación solar, formas materiales, percepción visual humana y representaciones culturales. Luego consideramos las diferentes formas culturales en que los matices y la sombra se han interpretado a través del espacio y el tiempo, e identificamos diversos efectos de sombra en diferentes contextos geográficos. Posteriormente, nos enfocamos en elementos clave particulares de la estética de las sombras del centro de Melbourne, discutimos cómo patrones de matices guían las coreografías urbanas y exploramos cómo los arquitectos han manipulado imaginativamente las sombras.
