‘It died once at playgroup, I didn’t know what to do’: towards vital, vibrant, material geographies of the mobile phone in austerity

ABSTRACT

Geographers have long considered mobile phones to be ubiquitous instruments and agents of globalisation, migration, commodification, and technologies for fieldwork. Drawing on two years of ethnographic research with families and communities in Greater Manchester, amidst nearly a decade of austerity cuts in the UK, this paper makes the case for revitalising, repoliticising and rematerialising the mobile phone in this socio-economic context. Drawing on concepts of vital materialism and vibrant matter, I illustrate the relationalities, resonances and recalcitrance of the mobile phone as a necessary utility, part of the fabric of everyday life in austerity, as well as a vital object and life in itself. Using a vignette approach, findings highlight experiences, mediations and material politics of companionship, indebtedness, gendered labour, financial independence, social isolation, vulnerability and durability, intimacy, sensuality and more. In the conclusions, I reflect on the everyday politics of the mobile phone during and in spite of austerity, including in a period of ongoing welfare digitalisation.

Los geógrafos han considerado desde hace mucho tiempo que los teléfonos móviles son instrumentos y agentes omnipresentes de globalización, migración, mercantilización y tecnologías para el trabajo de campo. Basándose en dos años de investigación etnográfica con familias y comunidades en el Gran Manchester, en medio de casi una década de recortes de austeridad en el Reino Unido, este artículo defiende la revitalización, repolitización y rematerialización del teléfono móvil en este contexto socioeconómico. Basándome en conceptos de materialismo vital y materia vibrante, ilustro las relaciones, resonancias y recalcitrancia del teléfono móvil como una utilidad necesaria, parte del tejido de la vida cotidiana en la austeridad, así como un objeto vital y la vida en sí misma. Usando un enfoque de viñeta, los hallazgos resaltan experiencias, mediaciones y políticas materiales de compañerismo, endeudamiento, trabajo de género, independencia financiera, aislamiento social, vulnerabilidad y durabilidad, intimidad, sensualidad y más. En las conclusiones, reflexiono sobre la política cotidiana del teléfono móvil durante y a pesar de la austeridad, incluso en un período de digitalización del bienestar en curso.

Résumé

Depuis longtemps, les géographes perçoivent le téléphone portable comme un instrument omniprésent et un agent de la mondialisation, de la migration, de la marchandisation ainsi qu’une technologie pour le travail sur le terrain. En s’appuyant sur deux années de recherches ethnographiques avec des familles et des communautés dans le Grand Manchester, pendant une décennie de mesures d’austérité au Royaume-Uni, cette communication met en évidence une revitalisation, une repolitisation et une rematérialisation du portable dans ce contexte socio-économique. En faisant appel aux concepts de matérialisme vital et de matériaux dynamiques, j’illustre les relations, les résonances et le caractère récalcitrant du téléphone portable en tant que commodité indispensable, qui fait partie de la trame de la vie quotidienne en temps d’austérité, et en tant qu’objet vital et la vie elle-même. À l’aide d’une méthode des vignettes, les résultats mettent en évidence les expériences, les médiations et les politiques concrètes de compagnie, d’endettement, de travail selon le sexe, de l’indépendance financière, de l’isolation sociale, de la vulnérabilité et de la durabilité, de l’intimité, de la sensualité, entre autres. Pour conclure, j’évoque la politique quotidienne du téléphone portable pendant et malgré l’austérité, y compris pendant une période de numérisation continue de l’aide sociale.
