The correlation between the addiction profile and general self-efficacy of patients receiving treatment for substance use disorder

ABSTRACT

Objective

The present study was conducted to determine the relations between the addiction profiles and general self-efficacy of patients receiving substance use disorder treatment.

Method

The study was planned in descriptive design and was conducted with 170 outpatients treated for substance use disorder. The Personal Data Form, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and the Addiction Profile Index Scale (API) were used in data collection.

Results

It was found that a total of 86.5% of the patients were male, the mean age of starting substance use was 17.4 years, mostly with alcohol 41.8% and marijuana 42.4%. The mean API total/severity score was found to be 11.56 ± 4.06. The highest score in API sub-dimensions was found in the sub-dimension of the effect of substance use on the individual’s life. The mean GSES score was 59.4 ± 11.9. It was also found that there was a weak and reverse relation between API score and GSES scores (r = – 0.278) (p < .05).

Conclusion

It was also determined that the total mean of API score was at a low level of addiction severity, and the decrease in self-efficacy belief increased the craving of addiction.
