Abstract
Porous asphalt (PA) pavement possesses frictional, environmental and safety benefits owing to its high content of air voids (VV). The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of crumb rubber (CR) and tafpack super (TPS) on the properties of PA mixture using styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) binder. High viscosity binders compound modified by CR and SBS, TPS and SBS were prepared, respectively. SBS modified one was used as a control group. Effects of CR and TPS on performances of binders were demonstrated, corresponding suitable contents for CR and TPS were determined. Comprehensive laboratory tests including Cantabro loss, draindown coefficient, Marshall stability, flow value, rutting resistance, cracking resistance, water stability and permeability were conducted to evaluate the performances of PA mixtures. The results revealed that consistency, high-temperature stability and viscosity of SBS binder were improved by CR and TPS, which presented positive relationships with CR and TPS concentrations. CR concentration of 10% and TPS concentration of 8% were determined based on the binder performances. Laboratory results of PA mixtures indicated that CR and TPS could improve the ravelling resistance, thermal sensitivity, temperature susceptibility and moisture damage resistance. TPS possessed better performances for both binder and mixture than CR. However, both CR and TPS exhibited adverse effects on the permeability of PA mixture.
