On training group facilitators: challenges and dilemmas

ABSTRACT

A brief introduction is made to a training course in group facilitation run by the authors. This is further illuminated by a set of operational principles and a description of the educational approach and methodology. The core structure of the course is based upon an open group process where participants and facilitators explore whatever emerges within the group setting whilst, from time to time, adopting a meta-reflective position from which to explore the implications for facilitation. This open reflective process is further aided by various resource materials and shared facilitator information and experience. The specific challenges of experiencing this course are considered both for the participants as well as for the facilitators. Moving between the micro processes of the ‘encounter’ and the meta-position inviting reflection on the group process and facilitator competences requires mental resilience and agility. The specific psychological challenges facing the participants are considered within Rogers’ ideas related to growth, fixity and fluidity. The critical importance of facilitator empathy as a counterpoint to the potential of participants experiencing threat and shame is considered.

Sur les facilitateurs d’une formation de groupe: Challenges et dilemmes

Une brève introduction fait référence à une formation à la facilitation de groupe conduite par les auteurs. Elle est ensuite éclairée par une série de principes opérationnels et par une description de l’approche éducative et de sa méthodologie. La structure centrale de la formation repose sur un processus de groupe ouvert dans lequel les participants et les facilitateurs explorent tout ce qui émerge au sein du dispositif groupal en adoptant en même temps, de temps à autre, une position méta-réflexive à partir de laquelle ils examinent les implications pour la facilitation. Ce processus réflexif ouvert est accompagné en outre de diverses ressources documentaires ainsi que par l’information et l’expérience partagée par le facilitateur. Le challenge particulier de l’expérience de cette formation est présenté tant du point de vue des participants que de celui des facilitateurs. Voyager entre les micro-processus de la ‘rencontre’ et la méta-position convoquant la réflexion sur le processus du groupe et les compétences de facilitateur requiert agilité et résilience mentale. Les défis psychologiques spécifiques devant lesquels se trouvent les participants sont étudiés en lien avec les idées de Rogers relatives à la croissance, la fixité et la fluidité. L’importance critique de l’empathie du facilitateur comme contrepoint à l’expérience potentielle de peur et de honte de la part des participants est examinée.

Zur Ausbildung von Gruppen-Facilitatoren: Herausforderungen und Dilemmata

Zusammenfassung: Ein Ausbildungskurs der Autoren für Gruppen-Facilitatoren wird hier vorgestellt. Weiter folgt eine Erläuterung zu einer Reihe von operationalen Grundsätzen sowie eine Beschreibung des Ausbildungsansatzes und der Methodologie. Die Kernstruktur des Kurses basiert auf einem offenen Gruppenprozess, während dem die Teilnehmenden und die Facilitatoren alles untersuchen, was innerhalb des Gruppensettings auftaucht, während sie von Zeit zu Zeit eine meta-reflexive Position einnehmen, von der aus sie die Implikationen für die Facilitation untersuchen. Dieser offene reflexive Prozess wird zudem unterstützt durch verschiedene Ressourcenmaterialien und durch die eingebrachte Information und Erfahrung der Facilitatoren. Die besonderen Herausforderungen dieses Kurses werden sowohl für die Teilnehmenden als auch für die Facilitatoren betrachtet. Es erfordert geistige Resilienz und Beweglichkeit, zwischen den Mikroprozessen des ‘Encounters’ und der Meta-Position hin und her zu wechseln, welche zur Reflexion zum Gruppenprozess und der Kompetenz der Facilitatoren einlädt. Die spezifischen psychologischen Herausforderungen, denen die Teilnehmenden gegenüberstehen, werden innerhalb von Rogers’ Ideen zu Wachstum, Starrheit und Beweglichkeit untersucht. Die Empathie der Facilitatoren als Gegengewicht zur Gefahr, dass Teilnehmende Bedrohung und Scham erleben, ist dabei ein entscheidender Gesichtspunkt.

Resumen: Se realiza una breve introducción a un curso de capacitación en facilitación grupal dirigido por los autores. Esto se ve más iluminado por un conjunto de principios operativos y una descripción del enfoque educativo y la metodología. La estructura central del curso se basa en un proceso de grupo abierto en el que los participantes y los facilitadores exploran lo que surge dentro del entorno del grupo y, de vez en cuando, adoptan una posición meta-reflexiva desde la cual explorar las implicaciones para la facilitación. Este proceso reflexivo abierto se ve ayudado por diversos materiales de recursos y la información y experiencia compartida del facilitador. Los desafíos específicos de experimentar este curso se consideran tanto para los participantes como para los facilitadores. Moverse entre los micro procesos del ‘encuentro’ y la meta-posición que invita a la reflexión sobre el proceso grupal y las competencias del facilitador requiere resistencia mental y agilidad. Los desafíos psicológicos específicos que enfrentan los participantes se consideran dentro de las ideas de Rogers relacionadas con el crecimiento, la fijación y la fluidez. Se considera la importancia crítica de la empatía del facilitador como un contrapunto al potencial de los participantes que experimentan amenazas y vergüenza.

Começa-se com uma breve apresentação de um curso de formação com vista à facilitação de grupos, que foi dirigido pelos autores. A mesma é posteriormente clarificada por um conjunto de princípios operacionais e uma descrição da abordagem e metodologia educacional. A estrutura base do curso baseia-se num processo de grupo aberto, no qual participantes e facilitadores exploram tudo aquilo que emerge no seio do contexto do grupo enquanto que, de tempos a tempos, se adota uma postura meta-reflexiva a partir da qual se exploram as implicações para a facilitação. Este processo reflexivo aberto é auxiliado por diversos recursos materiais e pela informação e experiência partilhada dos facilitadores. Os desafios específicos de vivência deste curso são tidos em conta, quer do ponto de vista dos participantes, quer dos facilitadores. Mover-se entre os micro processos do ‘encontro’ e a meta posição que convida à reflexão relativamente aos processos do grupo e às competências do facilitador exige resiliência e agilidade mental. Os desafios psicológicos específicos enfrentados pelos participantes são tidos em conta à luz dos conceitos de Rogers de crescimento, fixidez e fluidez. Considera-se a importância crítica da empatia por parte do facilitador como opositora da potencialidade de os participantes vivenciarem ameaças e vergonha.
