Pages 208-216 | Published online: 09 May 2022

Abstract

Édouard Glissant and contemporary Chinese intellectuals were faced with the same global context characterized by a West dominating the Third World during the twentieth century. Consequently, they reflected on the same issue, that of the cultural relationship between the nation and the world, specifically regarding the historical, the linguistic, and the poetic. Based on the example of the thought of Édouard Glissant, we try to establish a dialogue between Francophone theorists and Chinese theorists in the context of their reflection on the current global crisis. Our article unfolds along three comparable theoretical axes in Glissant and Chinese theorists: Creolization and the Vernacular Movement; the identity-rhizome and the identity of “young shoot of the old root,” Caribbean discourse and Chinese discourse within global cultural discourse.

Notes
