ABSTRACT
Infection prevention and control is a scientific approach and practical solution designed to prevent harm caused by infection to patients and health workers. Therefore, maintaining high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in veterinary practice is vitally important to ensure the safety of patients, staff and clients by minimising risk of acquiring infection whilst on the premises. Key infection control protocols play an important part in maintaining practice hygiene.

Emma Gerrard
Emma qualified in 2005 from Myerscough College, Preston. She gained the Diploma of Higher Education Clinical Veterinary Nursing in June 2009 followed by the RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing in January 2010. In 2011 she graduated from the BSc (Hons) Clinical Veterinary Nursing top up degree. Emma is a companion and farm animal SQP, a clinical coach and a tutor for ONCORE epd. Emma also volunteers for the BVNA and BSAVA as a regional representative. She works at Hafren Veterinary Group, a mixed practice in Powys and her interests are varied and include surgical nursing, infection control, feline behaviour and marketing.
