Insights into the drivers of biogas for the purpose of energy transition in Mokambo: a case study of a peri-urban area of Zambia

Abstract

This study focuses on a wide range of socio-political factors that contribute to the production and utilization of biogas in Mokambo, a peri-urban area of Mufulira in Zambia. The study employed a variety of qualitative techniques which includes in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and case study to answer the research questions. Revealed here is that there are essentially five issues driving biogas production: environmental protection and climate change; economic view and sustainable development; poverty reduction and international aid; and agricultural production. The research identifies four types of problems: institutional, situational, infrastructure and technical, and dispositional. The study emphasizes the local government’s effort to improve its strategies in relation to community awareness for the production and adoption of biogas in Zambia. This is combined with ongoing dialogue among stakeholders with a holistic approach towards a smooth and steady renewable energy transition.
