Abstract
Present study investigates the upper bound bearing capacity of a shallow strip foundation on unsaturated fly ash slope overlying clayey deposit through finite element limit analyses incorporating suction stress based engineering parameters. Study has been conducted to incorporate uncertainties in the critical parameters including water retention characteristics curve (WRCC) parameters on the overall bearing capacity under a probabilistic framework through factorial design methodology. Relative significance of uncertain parameters has been quantified and a prediction model has been developed through multiple regression analysis. Probability of failure of a shallow footing, resting near a fly ash slope, has further been evaluated using Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation technique.
