ABSTRACT
This paper provides an introduction and an applied case study for primary care givers and healthcare executives interested in ‘Six Sigma’ theories and methodologies. The paper provides a brief background into ‘Six Sigma’s’ capabilities, quality trends in the healthcare field, and ‘Six Sigma’s’ practical relevance to home healthcare itself. Hereafter, an executive briefing covering key ‘Six Sigma’ theories, concepts, and methods is presented. Finally, the accompanying case study traces and explains in detail how ‘Six Sigma’ methods can be applied to improve the accuracy, consistency, and turnaround time of home care reporting, processing, and billing functions.

Dr. Howard Gitlow is executive director of the Institute for the Study of Quality, director of the Master of Science degree in management science, and a professor of management science at the University of Miami Business School.
