Notes

1 In, Caitlin Green, ‘Macamathehou in Lincolnshire and the evidence for people named Muhammad in medieval England’, (blog post www.caitlingreen.org/2021/01/macamathehou-in-lincolnshire.html) it is suggested that the Lincolnshire name Macamethehou could be a thirteenth-century translation of the name Muhammed. It would be interesting for a wider study of the etymology in Arabic, English and other languages of the names sourced by Maguire to take place. In Arabic, Elias is الياس, and the English transliteration is ālyās. This would further demonstrate his Moorish or Islamic heritage and possibly tell us more about his journey.
