Abstract

Background

Physical activity has been recommended for the prevention and complementary treatment of hypertension. The objective of this research is to compare the responses of relative cardiovascular parameters of primary and secondary hypertensive patients to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise.

Methods

One hundred participants are expected to be recruited and randomised into four groups, namely, the Primary Hypertension, and Secondary Hypertension Experimental groups, primary Hypertension and Secondary Hypertension Control groups. The participants in the experimental groups will undergo cycle-ergometer training, 3 per week, for 30 minutes, while the control groups will be non-exercise control. Participants’ blood pressure will be measured using a calibrated digital monitor, heart rate (HR) will be measured using a fingertip digital pulse oximeter, and rate pressure product (RPP) will be calculated by multiplying systolic BP and HR at baseline and the end of 6weeks. Data will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, multivariate analysis for between the groups and paired t-test within the group. Alpha will be set at 0.05.

Results

Though different additional strategies such as exercise and lifestyle modifications exist for the control of hypertension. But no strategies have been identified to compare the cardiovascular responses of primary and secondary hypertensive patients to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise.
