Notes

1. Please note that this is only my experience of some of the classes taught here. I am not claiming to represent all classes and all teachers at Shanghai Theatre Academy.

2. The term “operation theatre” or an “operating theatre” is typically used in British English. The term in American English is a “surgical gallery” for when surgery can be viewed or typically an “operating room.”

3. Mandarin is a tonal language, where different words with varying tonal inflections can convey separate ideas. Simply, a single word may have different meanings based on the changing tones.

4. For information on the Meisner Institute, see https://www.meisnerinstitute.com/.

5. This article is based on a presentation I offered at the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) 2021 virtual conference, which was titled “Chu Acting Method.” I am extremely grateful and fortunate to be granted such a prestigious platform to share this knowledge.
