Comparative decomposition rates of piglets buried in manure: a pilot study and implications for forensic taphonomy

Abstract

Comparative decomposition rates of piglet carcasses were obtained when interred in air, soil, horse manure or pig manure to test the belief that pig manure expedites soft tissue decomposition in forensic cases. Data do not support this claim. Results show initial rapid rates of decomposition variables in air, but piglets buried in soil, horse manure and pig manure caught up to the exposed piglets’ decomposition rates by the end of the twelve-day experiment. Both piglet tissues and manure have low C/N ratios (<20:1) as opposed to the optimal composting C/N ratio of 30:1 to yield accelerated decomposition. Limitations of this study are addressed with suggestions for future studies with forensic relevance.

Résumé

Des données comparatives de décomposition de carcasses de porcelets à l’air libre ou enterrés dans le sol, le fumier de cheval ou de porc ont été obtenus pour vérifier l’affirmation que le fumier de porc accélère la décomposition des tissus. Les données ne supportent pas cette affirmation. Les résultats montrent des changements rapides initiaux de variables de décomposition dans l’air, mais les porcelets enterrés dans le sol, le fumier de cheval ou de porc, rattrapent le taux de décomposition dans l’air à la fin de l’expérience de 12 jours. Les tissus des porcelets et le fumier ont un faible rapport C/N (<20: 1) par opposition au rapport optimal C/N de 30 :1 lors de compostage en vue d’accélérer la décomposition. Les limites de cette étude sont abordées avec des suggestions pertinentes pour des expérimentations futures.
