God Locus of Health Control, Paranormal Beliefs, and Hypnotizability

ABSTRACT

Belief in the paranormal (e.g., spirits, extrasensory perception, fortune telling, extraterrestrials) is common. Extraordinary and magical beliefs have been linked with hypnotizability. A total of 167 undergraduates completed measures of paranormal and magical beliefs, locus of control, absorption, fantasy proneness, expectancy about being hypnotized, and the God Locus of Health Control scale (GLHC) and were hypnotized with the HGSHS:A. High and medium hypnotizable participants more strongly agreed with statements reflecting paranormal and magical beliefs and the assertion that God directly controls their health, relative to those less responsive to hypnosis. Using stepwise regression, we found that expectations about hypnosis along with scores on the GLHC scale accounted for 26% and 30% of the variance in behavioral and subjective scores on the HGSHS:A, respectively. The authors discuss paranormal beliefs and the link between the GLHC and hypnotizability.

Zusammenfassung: Der Glaube an das Paranormale (z.B. Geister, außersinnliche Wahrnehmung, Wahrsagen, Außerirdische) ist weit verbreitet. Außergewöhnliche und magische Glaubensvorstellungen wurden mit Hypnotisierbarkeit in Verbindung gebracht. Insgesamt 167 Studierende haben an Messungen teilgenommen zu paranormalem und magischem Glauben, locus of control, Absorption, Phantasiegeneigtheit, Erwartung an die Hypnose sowie anhand der God Locus of Health Control Scala (GLHC) und wurden entsprechend der HGSH:A hypnotisiert. Hoch und mittel hypnotisierbare Teilnehmende zeigten stärkere Zustimmung zu solchen Aussagen, welche paranormalen und magischen Glauben wiederspiegeln sowie die Versicherung, dass Gott direkt ihre Gesundheit kontrolliere, verglichen mit denjenigen, die weniger gut auf Hypnose ansprechen. Mittels schrittweiser Regression fanden wir, dass Erwartungen an die Hypnose zusammen mit den Ergebnissen aus der GLHC-Skala für 26% der Varianz der Verhaltens- bzw. 30% subjektiven Testwerte auf der HGSHS:A verantwortlich waren. Die Autoren diskutieren paranormale Überzeugungen und den Zusammenhang von GLHC und Hypnotisierbarkeit.

Des croyances en des phénomènes extraordinaires et magiques ont été liées à l’hypnotisabilité. Un total de 167 étudiants de premier cycle ont complété des mesures à propos des croyances paranormales et magiques, du locus de contrôle, de l’absorption, de la prédisposition aux fantasmes, de l’attente d’être hypnotisé et de l’échelle de Croyance en Dieu comme Responsable du Contrôle de la Santé, (GLHC) et ont été hypnotisés avec le HGSHS:A. Les participants hautement et moyennement hypnotizables étaient plus fortement d’accord avec les déclarations reflétant les croyances paranormales et magiques et l’affirmation selon laquelle Dieu contrôle directement leur santé, par rapport à ceux qui réagissent moins à l’hypnose. En utilisant une régression par étapes, nous avons constaté que les attentes concernant l’hypnose ainsi que les scores sur l’échelle GLHC représentaient respectivement 26% et 30% de la variance des scores comportementaux et subjectifs sur le HGSHS:A. Les auteurs discutent des croyances paranormales et du lien entre le GLHC et l’hypnotisabilité.

Resumen: Las creencias en lo paranormal (e.g., espíritus, percepción extrasensorial, clarividencia, extraterrestres) son comunes. Las creencias extraordinarias y mágicas han sido asociadas a la hipnotizabilidad. Un total de 167 estudiantes de pregrado completaron mediciones sobre creencias paranormales y mágicas, locus de control, absorción, tendencia a la fantasía, expectativa de ser hipnotizado, así como la Escala de Locus de Dios para el Control de la Salud (GLHC por sus siglas en inglés) y fueron hipnotizados con la Escala Grupal Harvard de Susceptibilidad Hipnótica, Forma A (HGSHS:A). Los participantes con alta y media hipnotizabilidad estuvieron más de acuerdo con las oraciones que reflejan creencias paranormales y mágicas y con la aseveración de que Dios contrala directamente su salud, en comparación a aquellos menos hipnotizables. Utilizando una regresión escalonada encontramos que las expectativas sobre hipnosis y las puntuaciones de la GLHC explicaron el 26% y el 30% de la varianza de las puntuaciones conductual y subjetiva de la HGSHS:A respectivamente. Los autores discuten las creencias paranormales y la relación entre la GLHC y la hipnotizabilidad.
