Dancing on the edge: competence, culture and organisation in the twenty-first century

Pages 330-333 | Published online: 04 Feb 2013

Notes

1. The authors stand in some awe of ‘chief executives in different sectors’ (p. 11) whom they regard as examples of PoTs. To arrive at their assessment, they have ‘actively shadowed (them) to discover both the secrets of their mastery and how they came by them’ (ibid); all to be revealed in Chapter 4.

2. Yet, this was only denial by an inner circle in government for political reasons. The overwhelming majority of South Africans both sufferers and others, thought otherwise. This was in part due to a massive awareness campaign effectively led by Zackie Achmat of the Treatment Action Campaign, ably supported by the local press.

3. Notably Article 26 (2): Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. And Article 27(1): Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits Citation[2].

4. Defined as ‘the capacity to reflect on one’s experience at a psychological level even whilst in the midst of it’ (p. 60). Derived from: learning to be; learning to be together; learning to know; learning to do. The ‘four pillars’ of education in the 21st century from Learning. The treasure within. UNESCO report by Jacques Delors.

5. Taxation is not a right of governments. It is imposed on citizens with their agreement (the stoic mentality) or by force if they disagree; the realisation that taxation without representation is tyranny was at the root of the American War of Independence (1775–1783). In France, taxation is used to pay for the entitlements of the majority in the form of social welfare, to pay farmers to grow unnecessary crops, and latterly to bail out banks for their bad business practices. The whole wasteful system is supported by the politicians who have a vested interest since they are paid out of taxes.
