Regime relationships of alluvial canal with seepage

Abstract

The estimation of the stable or regime condition of alluvial canals has a significant implication on the design practice of irrigation canals, river improvement works and general fluvial hydraulics applications. The existing regime relationship for this stability does not consider the effect of downward seepage from the canal, causing an increase in the mobility of canal bed material and thus changes the canal stability. Regime conditions for the prediction of canal geometry in alluvial canals affected by seepage are presented in the form of regression equations. This approach has been developed based on the application of functional analysis of the salient variables controlling the canal behaviour. It has been found that for no seepage, Lane's profile matches the experimental observations, which is not the case in seepage experiments. Regression relationships for the canal dimensions have been formulated using the experimental observation under seepage.
