Abstract

Carvalho R. and Silveira Neto R. Physical and human capital and Brazilian regional growth: a spatial econometric approach for the period 1970–2010, Regional Studies. This paper identifies the determinants of economic growth and analyses the dynamics of income using a panel of 522 Brazilian micro-regions for period 1970–2010. Based on the spatial extension of the Mankiw–Romer–Weil (MRW) model and explicitly considering both physical and human capital, the parameters of a Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) with fixed-effects are estimated. The direct and indirect impacts of the determinants of regional growth are then calculated. The results indicate strong spatial dependence among Brazilian micro-regions and that investments in both physical and human capital are important for the growth of the Brazilian regional economies.

Carvalho R. and Silveira Neto R.

Notes

1. For details on the estimation, see Elhorst (Citation2003) or Millo and Piras (Citation2012).

2. These direct impacts include feedback effects: a change in xir causes not only an effect on yi but also an effect on yj, which in turn causes an additional change in the variableyi.

3. Brazil can be divided into political–administrative regions: 27 states and 5570 municipalities or functional regions: five macro-regions, 137 meso-regions and 558 micro-regions.

4. MCAs are municipalities that have had a consistent boundary over the period 1970–2010 (Reis et al., Citation2005).

5. From now on, the paper uses the terms human capital and physical capital when referring to their empirical proxies.

6. In order to eliminate endogeneity resulting from simultaneity, it used explanatory variables at their initial values, while the dependent variable is the growth of per capita income during the periods.

7. To check for robustness of the results, the same set of impacts were calculated using different spatial matrixes (W2 and W3) and for the specification including the sectorial variables (SDM (3)). They are available as Tables A1–A3 respectively in the Supplemental data online.

8. With a model with the spatial lag of the dependent variables as a regressor, it is not possible to measure the effects of the variables directly from the estimated coefficients.

9. This latter value is approximately equivalent to an effect of a 1 SD (standard deviation) increase in the human capital variable.
