Second record of the genus Spinochactas Lourenço, 2016 in French Guiana and description of a new species (Scorpiones: Chactidae)

Summary

A new species of scorpion belonging to the genus Spinochactas Lourenço, 2016 (Chactidae) is described from the commune of Camopi, located close to the Eastern border of French Guiana with Brazil. The new species, Spinochactas camopi n. sp., is the second species belonging to the genus Spinochactas found in French Guiana, which remains endemic to this French overseas department. The description of the new species brings further evidence to the validity of the genus Spinochactas and to its biogeographic pattern of distribution which is now confirmed both for Inselberg formations and lowland rainforests of French Guiana. With the description of this new species, the number of known scorpion species occurring in French Guiana is increased to 40, of which 31 are endemic.

Deuxième citation du genre Spinochactas Lourenço, 2016 pour la Guyane française, avec la description d’une nouvelle espèce (Scorpiones : Chactidae). Une nouvelle espèce de Scorpion appartenant au genre Spinochactas Lourenço, 2016 (Chactidae) est décrite de la commune de Camopi, à proximité de la frontière orientale de la Guyane française avec le Brésil. La nouvelle espèce, Spinochactas camopi n. sp., représente le deuxième élément appartenant au genre Spinochactas trouvé en Guyane française, lequel reste endémique pour ce département français d’Outre-mer. La description de la nouvelle espèce apporte un nouvel appui à la validité du genre Spinochactas, mais aussi à son modèle de distribution géographique désormais confirmé pour des formations du type Inselberg, mais aussi pour les forêts humides de terres basses guyanaises. Avec la description de cette nouvelle espèce, le nombre d’espèces de Scorpions connues présentes en Guyane française est porté à 40, dont 31 espèces endémiques.
