Abstract
The innovation addressed in the current research is undertaken with a view to remediate some of the serious defects of easy care and permanent press cotton and blend fabrics by virtue of using cellulose nanoparticles as reinforcement. Cotton and polyester/cotton blend fabrics were treated with nanocellulosic reinforcement liquors at different concentrations. Performance properties of reinforced fabrics, as well as, SEM and washing fastness of the treated fabrics were successfully investigated. The results signified that all performance and tensile properties of reinforced fabrics were remarkably enhanced for cotton and blend fabric samples treated with any nanocellulosics. In general, these properties increased by increasing nanocellulose concentration regardless of the nanocellulose used. Also, the fabrics treated with either nanocellulosic reinforcement were protected from the influence of high-energy electron beam from destroying the cotton fibers even at low nanocellulose concentration. Therefore, cellulose nanowhiskers and its surface modifications introduce a breakthrough in textile finishing.
