1 The popular uprising in Iran in 1978–79 resulted in the toppling of the monarchy of Pahlavi and led to the establishment of an Islamic republic declared so by Khomeini. Elements within the clergy excluded the former left-wing, nationalist, and intellectual allies from any positions of power in the new regime over some years, and a return to conservative social values was enforced.
