Integration, unintegration, disintegration: an introduction

Abstract

This introduction to the two papers that follow by Anne Alvarez and Edna O'Shaughnessy is a revised version of the introduction to the ACP Study Day in February 2005 on ‘Integration, Unintegration, Disintegration’, at which Alvarez and O'Shaughnessy had presented and which the author had chaired. The background to the debate is given in terms of how the ACP Study Day itself came about, and the central theme is highlighted in terms of the question of whether unintegration is conceived of as a normal stage of development or only a temporary state of mind in response to catastrophic anxieties. Brief clinical material from a case supervised by the author is discussed in order to elaborate this central question.

Cette introduction aux deux articles qui suivent, rédigés par Anne Alvarez et par Edna O'Shaughnessy, est une version revue et corrigée de l'introduction faite par l'auteur lors de la Journée d'Étude de l'A.C.P. [Association des Psychothérapeutes d'Enfant] en février 2005 sur le thème «Intégration, non-intégration, désintégration». Au cours de cette réunion, présidée par l'auteur, A. Alvarez et E. O'Shaughnessy ont présenté leurs conférences. La toile de fond de cette discussion est expliquée par rapport à la manière dont cette Journée d'Étude a pu voir le jour; le thème central met en lumière la question de la nature de la non-intégration – s'agit-il d'une étape normale du développement ou simplement d'un état psychique temporaire déclenché par des angoisses catastrophiques? De courts extraits du matériel clinique d'un cas supervisé par l'auteur sont présentés afin d'approfondir cette question fondamentale.

Diese Einführung zu den zwei folgenden Beiträgen von Anne Alvarez und Edna o'Shaughnessy ist einer überarbeitete Fassung der Einführung zu dem ACP Studientag im Februar 2005 über ‘Integrierung, Unintegrierung, Disintegrierung’, an dem Alvarez und o'Shaughnessy referierten und den die Autorin moderierte. Es wird der Hintergrund zu dieser Debatte wie der ACP Studientag zustande kam, gegeben und das zentrale Thema als die Frage herausgestellt, ob Unintegrierung als ein normales Entwicklungsstadium betrachtet wird oder nur als temporärer Gemütszustand in Reaktion auf traumatische Ängste. Um diese zentrale Fragestellung herauszuarbeiten, wird etwas klinisches Material von einem Fall diskutiert, den die Autorin supervidierte.

Questa introduzione ai due articoli che seguono di Anne Alvarez e Edna O'Shaughnessy è una versione rivista dell'introduzione presentata alla Giornata di Studio dell' ACP nel febbraio 2005 sull' ‘Integrazione, non-integrazione, disintegrazione’ alla quale Alvarez e O'Shaughnessy parteciparono e che fu presieduta dall'autore stesso. Si spiega come è emersa l'idea della Giornata di Studio dell'ACP rispetto al problema se la non-integrazione debba essere concepita come un normale stadio dello sviluppo o solo uno stato mentale temporaneo in risposta ad ansie catastrofiche. Viene discusso del materiale clinico breve tratto da una supervisione clinica dell'autore per elaborare questo tema centrale.
