Abstract

Interest in tissue adhesives as alternatives for conventional wound closing applications such as sutures and staples has increased in the last few decades due to numerous possible advantages, including less discomfort and lower cost. In the current study, the authors developed novel tissue adhesives based on gelatin and alginate, crosslinked by carbodiimide. The antibiotic drug ceftazidime was incorporated for prevention of infection. The bonding strength of the bioadhesives, their swelling ration, drug release profile and biocompatibility were studied. The high bonding strength and good biocompatibility turns these new bioadhesives into a promising alternative for use in wound closing applications.
