Curriculum development appears successful if guided by both external incentives and visionary power from within. The SPICES model remains a suitable framework to describe modernization of medical education. The characteristics of the twenty-first century Utrecht program are many, including vertical integration, early clerkships, integration of clinical disciplines, and the application of Entrustable Professional Activities . If summarized in one expression, the aim of the Utrecht medical program is to educate medical professionals, ready to take up responsibilities in health care.
