Abstract

Due to the fast depletion of fossil fuels, every day to increasing the cost of fossil fuels and polluting the environment need for finding alternative fuel. The huge out flow of foreign exchange for purchasing the crude oil, on the one hand, had an impact on India's development This work focused on the production of low priced bio-diesel punnai oil and analyses the performance, emission and combustion characteristics in the diesel engine. The engine characteristic tests are carried out by using biodiesel and its blends with diesel (B20, B40, B60, B80, and B100). From the experimental results, it is proved that up to 40% (B40) of methyl ester of punnai oil does not affect the brake thermal efficiency but HC emission decreased by 1.3% compared to diesel and NOX emission increased by 1.03% compared to diesel at the same time smoke emission were reduced by 1.2% compared to diesel at B40 blends. Therefore, NOx and smoke are tradeoffs. The combustion characteristic like peak pressure rise, heat release rate for diesel, B40 and B100 are compared and presented in this paper. Oxygen content in the methyl ester of punnai oil diesel blends burns the fuel more efficiently.
