See Peter Hoff, Organisation und Programmentwicklung des DDR‐Fernsehens, in Knut Hickethier (ed.), Geschichte des Fernsehens in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Vol. 1: Institution, Technik und Programm. Rahmenaspekte der Programmqeschichte des Fernsehens (München, 1993), pp. 245–288, and Peter Hoff, Zwischen Mauerbau und VIII. Parteitag—Das Fernsehen in der DDR von 1961 bis 1971, in Knut Hickethier (ed.), Geschichte des deutschen Fernsehens (Stuttgart/Weimar, 1998).

These are the program codes of the ‘Arbeitsgemeinschaft Fernsehforschung’ (AGF, working group for television research) in the ‘GfK’ television research organization, the ongoing television programming research for the ‘Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Landesmedienanstalten’ (ALM, working group for national media institutions) which was performed by ‘GöfaK Medienforschung GmbH’ and the Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft (Institute for Communication Studies) at the Free University in Berlin, as represented by Weiß and Trebbe, and the ARD/ZDF programming analysis as performed by Krüger.

The individual classifications are subdivided into genres for television programs of fictional nature, television shows and game show programs, television programs dealing with reality, sport information and performance, non‐fictional children's and youth programs, music programs, program previews, advertising and other forms of advertising, miscellaneous programs typical for GDR television, mixed genres and miscellaneous non‐classifiable programs, and miscellaneous programs.

Hans‐Jürgen Weiß, Joachim Trebbe, Fernsehinformation, in Werner Wirth and Edmund Lauf (eds), Inhaltsanalyse (Köln, 2001).

The main categories are feature films, made‐for‐television films, documentary films, television series, stage plays, entertainment shows, entertaining information, news programs, political information programs, business programs, regional programs, programs on contemporary history, cultural information programs, televised courses and learning programs, talk shows, sporting news, sporting events, children's and youth programs, popular music, classical music, program previews, tele‐shopping, advertising, televised events, morning programs, noonday news programs, various information programs for daily life, scientific and technical programs, religious programs, miscellaneous.

For instance, the main category ‘news programs’ is further coded in a second step into e.g. weather/weather forecasts, news summaries, main news, news magazines, detailed news, regional news, news from a weekly perspective, headlines, foreign‐language news, news with commentary, news with subsequent weather news, press shows or press conferences.

These include e.g. ceremonial parades, military parades and roll calls or other defined forms of socialistic announcements. Specific forms of entertainment formats (e.g. Ostseestudio Rostock) are also included in this category.

These include all recorded programs regardless of their duration, provided their duration is not less than one minute, including station symbols, measurement tones, black backgrounds, announcements, previews, news, etc.

This means only such programming units in which the channel has broadcast something of an editorial or a non‐editorial nature. This includes programming bridges, slides, intermission films, station symbols, station clocks. One exception here can be found in the broadcast interruptions, which do not represent a programming unit and are, therefore, not taken into consideration.
