Figure 1. Preparation of single muscle fibers for recording tension. (a) The force transducer is an RCA 5734 vacuum tube to which fine forceps tips (b) have been attached to grip a muscle fiber after (c) one end had been cut from the shell. Microelectrodes inserted in the fiber (a, d) passed stimulating current and recorded changes in membrane potential via a cathode follower vacuum tube circuit.
