Abstract
Social anxiety, a common concern among college students, carries significant negative consequences. Group therapy is an efficient and cost-effective way to provide treatment, and cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT; Heimberg & Becker, Citation2002) is the most widely researched and empirically supported treatment for persons with social anxiety disorder. In this article, a session-by-session description of a social anxiety group designed specifically for college students is presented. The protocol combines elements from Heimberg and Becker's CBGT model along with social skills training, Padesky's (Citation1997) “assertive defense of the self” intervention, and an interpersonal process component.
We would like to acknowledge Leonor Diaz for her input regarding adapting anxiety disorder treatment for the college population. We would also like to thank Joel Wong and Holly Kozee for their contributions to the organization and content of the group.
