Shedding Light on Daylight Fluorescent Artists’ Pigments, Part 2: Spectral Properties and Light Stability

ABSTRACT

Daylight fluorescent pigments are complex artists’ colorants made of multiple admixed dyes and additives infused in a polymer resin. Their unique photochemistry creates interesting optical effects that make them appealing for a range of applications. The wavelength dependence of the dyes’ emissive properties has also led to their use in works meant to be displayed under nontraditional high energy light sources, such as blacklights. The intended display methods and the photochemistry of the constituent dyes can lead to chemical instability and also pose unique challenges for conservation and exhibition. In Part 1 of this research, we reported on the chemical constituents of colorants from two major manufacturers. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive report of the spectral properties and lightfastness of paints prepared with the pigments. The optical properties and chemical stability of these colorants are correlated with the composition. Variation in composition can lead to unique markers that could be useful for conservation treatment and exhibition considerations. Changes in the dyes used in the pigment formulation over time are considered in the comparison of two objects: a Stephen Sprouse silvered leather motorcycle jacket featuring fluorescent art by Stefano Castronovo and selections from the Day-Glo Designer’s Guide from 1969.

RÉSUMÉ

Les pigments fluorescents à la lumière du jour sont des colorants complexes faits de multiples teintures mélangées et d'additifs infusés dans une résine polymère. Leur photochimie unique crée des effets optiques intéressants qui les rendent attrayants pour un éventail d'applications. La dépendance des longueurs d'ondes aux propriétés d'émission des teintures a aussi mené à leur utilisation dans des œuvres conçues pour être présentées sous des sources de lumière non-traditionnelles de très haute énergie, telles que l'éclairage ultraviolet. Les méthodes d'exposition prévue et la photochimie des teintures constituantes peuvent mener à des instabilités chimiques et poser des défis uniques pour leur préservation et leur mise en exposition. Dans la partie 1 de cette recherche, nous avons présenté les composantes chimiques des colorants provenant de deux grands manufacturiers. Dans ce document, nous fournissons un rapport complet des propriétés spectrales et de la résistance à la lumière des peintures préparées avec ces pigments. Les propriétés optiques et la stabilité chimique de ces colorants sont corrélées avec leur composition. Des variations de composition peuvent mener à des marqueurs uniques qui pourraient être utiles dans le cadre de considérations liées à leur restauration et mise en exposition. A dependência do comprimento de onda das propriedades emissivas dos corantes também levou ao seu uso em obras destinadas a serem exibidas sob fontes de luz de alta energia não tradicionais, como a luz negra. Os métodos de exibição pretendidos e a fotoquímica dos corantes constituintes podem levar à instabilidade química e também representar desafios únicos para a conservação e exposição.
