1. In England and Wales, standards set down by the Secretary of State which define the threshold competence to be met by anyone wishing to gain recognition as a qualified teacher.
2. The statutory curriculum which, with local variations, all children in state schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must learn. It was established in 1988 and has subsequently gone through a variety of modifications.
3. Circular 4/98 (Department for Education & Science, 1998) and Qualifying to teach: professional standards for qualified teacher status and requirements for Initial Teacher Training (Teacher Training Agency and Department for Education & Skills, 2002)—which replaced it—set out the statutory regulations enshrining the Standards.
4. Office for Standards in Education, the UK government's quality assurance body. The organisation regularly inspects initial teacher education provision and awards quality grades which affect the allocation of student numbers by the TTA and consequently the funding to the provider.
