1. In the nineteenth century there was an elaborate system of dues known as ‘comey’, payable by foreign traders, eg in the rivers of Benin and Brass, comey was computed at a certain value of goods for each mast a vessel carried, and that value was the goods required for the purchase of two puncheons of palm oil. (see CitationGann and Duignan 96–97).

2. The Kiama declaration marked a unanimous decision by Niger Delta youths who gathered together over the grave of Isaac Adaka Boro in the remote town of Kiama to declare solidarity for the ideas and ideals which Boro stood and died for in the 1960s.
