Prediction of Flow Characteristics of Bimodal Slurry in Horizontal Pipe Flow

Abstract

Pressure drop and concentration distribution for a bimodal slurry have been predicted using the modified two-layer model and the Karabelas model. The bimodal slurry is made up of narrow-sized silica sand as coarse particles and fly ash as fine particles. Comparison of pressure drop with the experimental data shows that the modified two-layer model predicts the pressure drop reasonably well except close to the deposition velocity. The modified Karabelas model predicts the concentration distribution reasonably well for narrow-sized silica sand slurry and bimodal slurry up to an average efflux concentration of 20% (by weight). Large discrepancies are seen at higher average efflux concentrations.
