Abstract
Despite numerous publications concerned with self-injurious behaviour (SIB).surprisingly little has been written about the wider social and ethical issues that may be encountered in the treatment of this behaviour. This artic1e auempts to identify some of these issues as they relate to research into SIB, as well as in the analysis and treatment of this kind of behaviour. The use of restraint, protective devices, reinforcement and aversive procedures are discussed and guidelines are suggested.
