Physicochemical quality evaluation for the inlet and outlet water taken from of home filtration systems

ABSTRACT

Studying the quality of drinking water is one of the issues that are directly related to health and personal and public hygiene.Since water quality varies from region to region, the use of filtration techniques can produce qualitative drinking water free from organic and inorganic contaminants. The aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical and microbial quality of water in home water filtration systems (HWFSs).In this descriptive-analytical study performed during 2019–2020, the samples were directly taken from the inlet and outlet valves of 50 HWFSs from different places of Babol city for physical, chemical, and microbial experiments. The results were analysed using SPSS 18, descriptive statistics, and t test, as well as comparing to national standards.In the current study, the concentration of Fe after passing through the HWFSs was 91.5%, the concentrations of fluoride and sulphate in the water entering the HWFSs were 75% and 69%, respectively, and the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite in water were reduced by 33% and 10%, respectively. Moreover, these HWFSs had the highest (91.5%) and lowest (10%) efficiency in the removal of Fe and nitrite. Besides, there was a significant relationship between input and output values of all parameters measured in this study (p < 0.05). No contamination of coliform was observed at the inlet and outlet of the HWFSs.The findings show the importance of regular maintenance and repair of HWFSs to ensure that water samples are in accordance with national standards.
