Abstract

This paper describes the online learning and teaching resources that are currently being developed for the contemporary and historical UK censuses as part of a project that is being funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to support its ‘Information Environment’. The online resources are intended to support learners and teachers in the UK Higher and Further Education sectors who are interested in UK census data. A variety of resources is available including: interactive online tutorials with practical exercises, textual materials, web pages and PowerPoint slides. The materials have been designed to be as flexible as possible encouraging a ‘pick and mix’ approach to the use of the resources. The resources are also intended to facilitate the use of 2001 census data. Feedback from student piloting and consultation workshops is also considered. All the resources can be accessed at: http://www.chcc.ac.uk.

The JISC, which is funded by UK post‐16 and higher education funding councils, is a body that supports further and higher education by providing strategic guidance, advice and opportunities to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to support teaching, learning, research and administration. More information on JISC's Information Environment can be found at: http://www.jisc.ac.uk/dner/development/IEstrategy.html

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's leading research funding and training agency addressing economic and social concerns (http://www.esrc.ac.uk).

The project will provide an education gateway to these data, related resources, metadata and learning resources via the JISC Information Environment.

This provides ‘single sign on’ and entry to JISC‐funded resources for UK HE and FE users. Further information about ATHENS can be found at: http://www.athens.ac.uk/. People wanting to access contemporary census data also need to register online using the recently established Census Registration Service (http://census.data‐archive.ac.uk/).

LBS and SAS content varies in Northern Ireland.
